SISTER MARIE CORONA MILLER, age 85, died on December 22, 2020 at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. Born in Pittsburgh, Sister Marie Corona entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on October 11, 1956, from Saint Paul Parish in Butler, PA. Preceded in death by her parents, William M. and Hilda (Graham) Miller, a brother, Reverend William M. Miller, and a sister, Joan Shaffer, she is survived by a nephew, Dr. Mark Shaffer, a niece, Mrs. Kerri Ann (Marc) Nellist, grandnephews and grandnieces. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Seton Hill University and a master’s degree in special education for the deaf from the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to her long tenure, 1958-1984, at DePaul School for Hearing and Speech, Sister Marie Corona taught primary level students at Saint Anselm, now Word of God School in Swissvale. In 1984, she was assigned to the nursing department of Assumption Hall, the former retirement and infirmary of the Sisters, a position she held until 1987, when she was appointed staff member of the Doran Hall Retreat and Renewal Center. In 1990, Sister Marie Corona volunteered her services at Pittsburgh Mercy Hospital, alternately, as a nursing assistant, therapy aide and coordinator of Healthwalk. Sister Marie Corona assisted in the Archives department of the Sisters of Charity and was instrumental in obtaining the oral history of many of the Sisters of Charity. Her 35-year commitment to this labor of love contributed significantly to the archival record and the long-term preservation of the sisters’ stories of charity. While reflecting on her life as a Sister of Charity, Sister Marie Corona said, “My vows of poverty, chastity and obedience as a Sister of Charity have been my guiding light, which enables me to fulfill my commitment of ministry in our spirit of humility, simplicity and love. Calling out each day in my heart are the words: the Charity of Christ urges us.”
