
SISTER MARIE B. HIRT, SC, age 102, died at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg, on January 16, 2017. A Pittsburgh native, Sister Marie Berchmans Hirt, or Sister Marie B., as she preferred to be called, entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill on March 25, 1933, from St, Mary of the Mount Parish, Mt. Washington. Preceded in death by her parents, George and Lillian (Lenz) Hirt, a brother, Bernard, and two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy (Donald) Schmadel, and Mrs. Agnes (Hugh) Camp, she is survived by nieces and nephews. She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and was a teacher of mathematics in elementary and high schools of the dioceses of Altoona-Johnstown and Pittsburgh from 1936-1984. She also served as business manager for Elizabeth Seton High School and Sacred Heart High School during the time she taught in those places. Sister Marie ministered, part-time, in the accounting department for the Legal Guardianship Program for the Aged at Ursuline Center, Pittsburgh. Endowed with a beautiful singing voice, Sister Marie believed and modeled the words of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, “The goodness of our God is everything.”
