Greetings for Holy Week and Easter
Dear Friends,
We have all experienced pensive days and dark nights during the season of Lent because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The suffering and death caused by the coronavirus gives new meaning to the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we commemorate during the Triduum, the days when we experience the highs and lows of our faith.
During the global crisis, we have lamented the sacrifice required of persons who have risked their health and even given their lives to care for sick and suffering persons. We have also felt hope and possibility because of those who are helping to ease suffering in many ways. Our grocers, truck drivers, custodians, utility workers, and many others are making sure that the healing work is sustained and that we are fed, clothed, and safe as we confine ourselves at home. We celebrate the blessings of their labor in a new light.
You also have shown us Easter hope in many ways. Your messages and gifts of support during these days of confinement have comforted us. We have been edified by your sacrifices and efforts to reduce the transmission of the virus. Your choice to pray with us for those who are sick and those who are healers is heartening. You are doing the unseen work that keeps our shared life moving. Thank you for your commitment to helping us care for our elder sisters and for your support of our mission and ministries. We celebrate the blessing you have been to us as you continue to help us care for the most vulnerable among us, even in these days of uncertainty.
As we move into and through the Triduum, may we followers of Jesus join the original disciples as they:
- treasure on Holy Thursday the meal with Jesus from which our Eucharist flows,
- move through the dark hours of fear and loss and grieving on Good Friday,
- wait in hope on Holy Saturday for God’s bringing life out of death in Easter’s resurrection—the ultimate joyful experience of our faith.
May God keep you safe and fill you with the joy of new life throughout the Easter Season.
