
SISTER M. SCHOLASTICA JOYCE, age 86, who died at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg, on April 7, 2013. Born in Somerset, PA, Sister M. Scholastica entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1945, from Saint Bonaventure Parish in Blacklick, PA. Preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Edith (Rhoades) Joyce, three brothers, Brice (Floyd), Richard, and David and two sisters, Patricia Joyce and Frances Conforti, she is survived by two brothers, James and Theodore, a sister-in-law Helen, and nieces and nephews. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Education of the Deaf from Wayne State University and a master’s degree in Education of the Blind from the Catholic University of America. Sister Scholastica was missioned to The De Paul School for Hearing and Speech in 1947, where she taught children in the primary department until 1960. She was then assigned to the intermediate and advanced department until 1996. She retired to Caritas Christi in 1999, where her skills as a seamstress and a prize-winning artist flourished. Sister Scholastica was imbued with the spirit of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and echoed her words, “In all events, happen now what will, I rest in God.”
