SISTER M. CLEMENTINE O’FRIEL, SC age 102 who died at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill on June 8, 2022 in her 83rd year of religious life.
A native of Altoona, Pennsylvania, Sister M. Clementine entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1938, from Saint Leo Parish, Altoona. Preceded in death by her parents, George M. and Lillian M. (Schell) O’Friel; three brothers, Reverend Daniel F. O’Friel, George S. and Edward S. O’Friel; five sisters, Mrs. Charlotte (Eugene) Bettwy, Mrs. Lilly M. (Timothy) Welch, Sister M. Cornelia, SC, Mrs. Zita (John) Milliron, and Mary Alice Curry (David).
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in history and psychology from Seton Hill University and a master’s degree in religion and philosophy from the Catholic University of America. An elementary school teacher and principal, Sister M. Clementine taught in schools of the dioceses of Altoona-Johnstown, Greensburg, Pittsburgh and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. She also taught students at the former Elizabeth Seton High School and Bishop Guilfoyle High School. From 1955 to 1962, Sister M. Clementine taught religion at Seton Hill University during the academic year and during the summer sessions. After her departure from the classroom, Sister M. Clementine ministered as a bookkeeper of the lunch program and tuition accounts at Sacred Heart School, Altoona and served at Kelly’s Discovery Daycare in Altoona. She retired to Caritas Christi in 2000.
Sister M. Clementine reflected on her years of religious life. “I spent 63 years in one ministry–religious education and, as I share this joy, I pray for those who labored with me, and also for the hundreds who were under my care. My hope is that they were drawn a little closer to the Lord because of our association.”
